History

How Hosford-Abernethy Came To Be

Hosford-Abernethy is a close-in Southeast Portland neighborhood named for two of its schools, occupying the area between the Willamette River and the inner east-side residential districts. Like neighboring Buckman, it was among the earliest parts of the east side to develop, filling in during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with houses, churches, and small commercial blocks.

The neighborhood's western edge runs along the river and the Central Eastside industrial zone, while its interior holds historic residential streets. The Southeast Division Street and Clinton Street corridors became commercial and cultural spines, with the Clinton Street Theater standing as one of the country's longest continuously operating movie houses. The OMSI museum and the eastern Willamette riverfront also fall within or near the neighborhood's bounds.

Today Hosford-Abernethy is a desirable, walkable inner neighborhood that pairs historic homes with two of Southeast's liveliest food-and-drink corridors along Division and Clinton.
