History
How Goose Hollow Came To Be
Goose Hollow occupies the gulch and slopes just west of downtown Portland, between the central city and the West Hills. The colorful name dates to the nineteenth century, when residents kept geese that wandered the low, marshy ground of the hollow, and Tanner Creek once ran openly through the area before being culverted beneath the streets.
The neighborhood became an early home to working-class and immigrant Portlanders, and over the decades it grew into a dense mix of apartments, older houses, and small commercial blocks pressed against the hillside. Its identity has long been tied to its position as a gateway between downtown and the wealthy West Hills above.
Today Goose Hollow is closely associated with Providence Park, the stadium that anchors the neighborhood and fills its streets on game days, as well as with the venerable Goose Hollow Inn, a longtime tavern that helped fix the neighborhood's name in local memory.
