About
South Burlingame has one of Southwest Portland's most precisely documented founding moments: on June 7, 1910, B.M. Lombard and the Fulton Park Land Company platted the neighborhood as part of the Fulton Park District. The original plat combined the aspirations of Portland's streetcar-era suburban expansion with the natural contours of the SW hills — a mix that produced a neighborhood of modest craftsman homes, gentle slopes, and a surprisingly strong community identity for an area with no traditional main street.
The neighborhood is home to Fulton Park (a neighborhood green with play facilities), Burlingame Park, and Capitol Hill School. Its borders — SW Taylors Ferry Rd to the east and south, I-5 to the west — give it a somewhat contained, self-contained character. The South Burlingame Neighborhood Association (SBNA) is active through SWNI, meeting on the third Thursday of February, May, August, and November, with a particular focus on environmental stewardship: neighbors regularly organize stream restoration workdays in the creek corridors that thread the neighborhood.
South Burlingame sits within convenient reach of the commercial activity on SW Barbur Blvd and SW Terwilliger, making it one of the more accessible purely residential SW neighborhoods. The neighborhood is known for low crime rates, high homeownership (the vast majority of households are owner-occupied), and an engaged civic culture that punches above its demographic weight in Portland land-use discussions.
Boundaries: Bordered by SW Taylors Ferry Rd to the east and south, I-5 to the west, and Multnomah / South Portland to the north. Adjacent to West Portland Park, Markham, and Multnomah Village corridor.
