About
West Portland Park occupies a broad swath of Southwest Portland between I-5 and Barbur Blvd, south of South Burlingame and north of Arnold Creek. More suburban in feel than neighborhoods closer to the city center, it is characterized by established subdivisions on gentle terrain, lower commercial density, and a community that has historically organized effectively around park preservation and natural area protection.
The neighborhood's green-space achievements are notable: the Kerr Site was purchased jointly by the City of Portland and City of Lake Oswego with the intent of eventually installing walking trails; Loll Wildwood (formerly the West Portland Park Natural Area, purchased in 1995) protects wildlife habitat at the headwaters of Arnold Creek; and Holly Farm Park was completed in 2007 after a partnership between the Parks Foundation, Portland Parks & Recreation, and the West Portland Park Neighborhood Association — a model of community-driven park development.
The northern portion of the neighborhood, called Capitol Hill, contains the Capitol Hill Library (a Multnomah County branch), the Islamic Center of Portland, and the Portland Rizwan Mosque of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community — giving the area a quietly multicultural character unusual in southwest Portland. The West Portland Park Neighborhood Association Board meets on the second Thursday of the month.
Boundaries: Bordered by I-5 to the east, SW Barbur Blvd and SW Taylors Ferry Rd to the north, Arnold Creek neighborhood to the south, and the Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy corridor to the west. Adjacent to South Burlingame, Markham, and Arnold Creek.
The Vibe
West Portland Park is green, quiet, and tucked away, a southwest neighborhood where wooded streets and a fringe location give it a calm, semi-secluded feel. It draws households looking for an affordable, low-key base with easy access to the suburbs and the rest of the metro area.
The atmosphere is relaxed and residential, defined by trees and houses rather than commerce.
History
West Portland Park lies in the southwestern reaches of the city, a residential district that grew through the twentieth century along the Capitol Highway and Barbur Boulevard corridors near the city's edge. Its name reflects an early plat for the area, laid out as Portland expanded westward across the hills.
Development came gradually and unevenly here, shaped by hilly terrain and the area's distance from the urban core. Homes filled in along streets that follow the contours of the land, with the neighborhood retaining a semi-rural, wooded character in places well into its growth.
Today West Portland Park remains a quiet, primarily residential neighborhood on the southwest fringe, valued for its trees, its access toward Tigard and the suburbs, and its tucked-away streets.
