About

Vernon

Vernon occupies a pivotal position in NE Portland's creative ecosystem. Alberta Street cuts across the neighborhood and connects to the King and Concordia neighborhoods in the Alberta Arts District, a 1.5-mile corridor that runs from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to NE 33rd Avenue. The district transformed over the late 1990s and 2000s from a neglected strip into an epicenter of youth and culture, lined with art galleries, restaurants, clothing boutiques, and gift shops. The catalyst was "Last Thursdays" — an arts-focused monthly gathering that began in 1997 and still draws thousands of visitors to Alberta Street on the last Thursday of each summer month.

Alberta Park covers more than 16 acres of the Vernon neighborhood, its trails winding around baseball diamonds, a soccer field, a tennis court, and a playground — a genuine community green in a dense urban setting. The neighborhood vibe is an urban-suburban mix that attracts young professionals and families to its older craftsman bungalows and quiet side streets. Great Notion Brewing at 2204 NE Alberta St anchors the beer-and-taco scene in the district, while Cha Ba Thai and other locally owned eateries round out a dining scene that punches well above the neighborhood's modest size.

The Vibe

Walkable, artsy Alberta-adjacent streets

History

How Vernon Came To Be

Vernon is an inner Northeast Portland neighborhood named for Vernon School, set just east of the Alberta Arts District. It developed in the early twentieth century as part of Portland's eastside streetcar expansion, with Craftsman bungalows, cottages, and four-square homes filling its tidy residential grid through the 1910s and 1920s.

For much of the twentieth century, Vernon and its surrounding neighborhoods were at the heart of Portland's historically African American community, particularly as redlining and displacement concentrated Black residents in inner North and Northeast Portland. The nearby Alberta corridor became a vital commercial and cultural center for that community. In recent decades, Vernon and the Alberta district have undergone significant gentrification and demographic change, reshaping the area's character.

Today Vernon is a sought-after residential neighborhood prized for its period homes, walkability, and immediate proximity to the galleries, restaurants, and shops of Alberta Street.
