— Humboldt, Portland
About
Humboldt sits in the center of what was once the independent City of Albina, incorporated in 1887 and annexed by Portland in 1891. The neighborhood takes its name from the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, a common naming convention for the era. Its first European settler was John W. Yeon, who built a cabin on his land claim at what is now NE 13th and Prescott in 1847. By the 1880s the transcontinental railroad connection at Albina made the area a working-class hub.
By 1940, Humboldt and the surrounding Albina District had become home to half of Portland's entire Black population. During World War II, African American workers who came to Portland for Kaiser Shipbuilding jobs settled here permanently, growing a rich community of churches, jazz clubs, businesses, and civic institutions along N Williams Avenue. This era produced Portland's most vibrant Black cultural scene — and its abrupt dismantling via urban renewal and hospital expansion projects in the 1960s–70s remains one of the city's defining civic traumas.
Modern Humboldt has seen significant reinvestment, most visibly along the N Williams Avenue cycle track — frequently ranked among America's best protected bike lanes. Saraveza bottle shop and Red E Cafe anchor the N Killingsworth corridor. The neighborhood retains significant African American heritage even as demographics have shifted, and community organizations actively work to preserve the history and support returning families through affordable housing initiatives.
Boundaries: Bounded by N Killingsworth St to the north, NE 15th Ave to the east, N Prescott St to the south, and N Williams Ave / N Interstate Ave to the west. Adjacent to Woodlawn and King (east), Boise (south), and Overlook (west).
