About

Alameda

Alameda was first platted in 1909 by the Alameda Land Company on land that was part of the 1859 William and Isabella Bowering Donation Land Claim — orchards, burned timberlands, and a working dairy. The Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905 triggered a regional real estate boom, and construction surged through the 1910s and 1920s. Homes along the ridge were often custom-designed with live-in quarters for household staff, and architectural styles ranging from Arts and Crafts and Craftsman to Tudor Revival and English Cottage remain remarkably intact today.

The Alameda Ridge itself is a geologic monument: a gravel bar deposited roughly 13,000–15,000 years ago when the catastrophic Missoula Floods poured across the Pacific Northwest and left their mark on the Portland Basin. Today the ridge rewards residents with sweeping views of the West Hills and downtown Portland. Though almost entirely residential, Fremont Street serves as the neighborhood's commercial spine, offering coffee, pizza, dining, and local shops within easy walking distance. The neighborhood reports around 5,400 residents and maintains one of NE Portland's highest walkability scores for a primarily residential enclave.
