History

How Sylvan-Highlands Came To Be

Sylvan-Highlands lies in the West Hills southwest of downtown Portland, clustered around the Sylvan area near the crest of the hills along the Sunset Highway corridor. The neighborhood took shape through the twentieth century as roads and highways made the wooded slopes accessible to residential development.

Its name reflects its character: "sylvan" meaning of the woods, and "highlands" for its elevated hillside setting. Homes were built among the trees on terrain that rewards residents with greenery and outlooks while keeping the city close.

The neighborhood has remained a quiet residential pocket of the West Hills, valued for its forested feel, its central location between downtown and the western suburbs, and its proximity to Washington Park and the surrounding trail network.
