The Vibe

What Sunnyside Feels Like

Dense, walkable, bohemian inner Southeast

Sunnyside hums with the energy of two beloved commercial streets. Belmont and Hawthorne are lined with cafes, restaurants, bars, vintage shops, and the landmark theaters that draw visitors from across the city, while the residential blocks in between are dense, leafy, and full of character.

The neighborhood has a youthful, creative, and slightly bohemian feel, walkable and well-connected, where it is easy to live without a car and find something to do within a few blocks of home.

History

How Sunnyside Came To Be

Sunnyside is one of inner Southeast Portland's oldest residential neighborhoods, developing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the streetcar carried the city eastward. It was platted as an early suburban addition and filled in quickly with the bungalows and four-squares that still characterize its blocks today.

The neighborhood straddles two of the city's most storied commercial streets, Hawthorne Boulevard and Belmont Street, both of which developed as bustling streetcar-era shopping districts. These corridors gave Sunnyside a strong commercial identity and made it a center of Portland's independent retail and dining culture.

Throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, Sunnyside has remained a dense, walkable, and culturally vibrant neighborhood. Its historic main streets, eclectic mix of residents, and proximity to the city core have kept it one of inner Southeast's most lively and sought-after areas.
