— Healy Heights, Portland
About
Healy Heights sits on a ridge in Portland's West Hills, west of Hillsdale and south of the more densely populated Southwest Hills neighborhoods. The area straddles the divide between Cascade views to the east and Coast Range views to the west — a geography that gives even modest homes an outsized sense of elevation and openness. Like many of Portland's upper West Hills neighborhoods, Healy Heights was developed largely in the post-WWII era with ranch-style and Craftsman homes on generous lots.
Healy Heights Park is the neighborhood's focal point, featuring a playground, basketball court, soccer field, and walking trails with city and mountain views. The 645-acre Tryon Creek State Natural Area is accessible at the neighborhood's southern edge — Oregon's only state park within a major metro area, with 8 miles of trails and 8 bridges over the creek. The combination of neighborhood-scale park amenities and state park access makes Healy Heights a destination for trail runners, dog walkers, and birders from across SW Portland.
Healy Heights shares a neighborhood association structure with adjacent Southwest Hills through the Southwest Neighborhoods Inc. coalition. Trafton's Foreign Auto, a long-running independent auto shop on the Hillsdale corridor, is one of the few commercial landmarks closely associated with the Healy Heights area in local lore.
Boundaries: Bordered by SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy to the north, SW Terwilliger Blvd / Southwest Hills to the east, Tryon Creek State Natural Area to the south, and the ridge crest toward Markham to the west. Adjacent to Southwest Hills, Bridlemile, and Markham.
The Vibe
Healy Heights is high, quiet, and view-rich, a small hilltop neighborhood where homes look out over the city and the valleys beyond. The mood is secluded and residential.
It appeals to those drawn by the panoramas and the calm of living near the top of the West Hills, a short distance from the open green of Council Crest.
History
Healy Heights crowns one of the higher points in Portland's southwest hills, a small residential neighborhood perched on the ridge above the city. Its lofty position has long made it a place of sweeping views, taking in downtown, the Willamette and Columbia valleys, and the Cascade peaks on clear days.
The neighborhood developed as homes climbed the ridgeline through the twentieth century, drawn by the panoramas and the seclusion the elevation afforded. The hilltop's prominence also made it a logical site for broadcast and communications towers, which became a familiar landmark crowning the southwest skyline.
Today Healy Heights remains a small, exclusive-feeling hillside enclave, defined by its elevation, its views, and its quiet, tucked-away streets near the larger green expanse of Council Crest.
