History

How University Park Came To Be

University Park takes its name from the University of Portland, which sits on a bluff above the Willamette River at the neighborhood's heart. The Catholic university, founded in the late nineteenth century, has shaped the area's identity for well over a century.

The surrounding residential streets developed in the early twentieth century alongside the peninsula's industrial and shipping economy, and the neighborhood absorbed waves of workers during the World War II shipbuilding boom along the river.

Today University Park balances the rhythms of campus life with established residential blocks, sitting between St. Johns to the north and the rest of the peninsula to the south.
