Cathedral Park

Cathedral Park takes its name from the dramatic Gothic arch design of the St. Johns Bridge's towers and supports — structural elements that frame the neighborhood's 22-acre riverside park like a stone cathedral. The St. Johns Bridge itself, completed in 1931 and designed by David Steinman, is a steel suspension bridge spanning the Willamette River with 400-foot towers and 205-foot navigational clearance — the tallest bridge in Portland. The adjacent park and neighborhood were named for the bridge's ecclesiastical aesthetic.

Cathedral Park sits just south of the St. Johns neighborhood on the North Portland peninsula, bounded by the Willamette River to the west and the Burlington Northern Railway to the south. The neighborhood developed in the early 20th century as a working-class residential district adjacent to the industrial riverfront. The Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, launched in 1980, has grown into the longest-running jazz festival west of the Mississippi River, drawing thousands of visitors to the park each summer.

Today Cathedral Park is a small but beloved neighborhood with an outsized cultural footprint. Occidental Brewing, a family-owned Euro-inspired brewery, operates a spacious tasting room near the park. Signal Station Pizza serves wood-fired pies from a repurposed vintage gas station on N Lombard. Tienda Santa Cruz, tucked into a Mexican grocery and bakery, offers authentic food beloved by the local Latino community. The park itself draws dog walkers, wedding parties, kayakers, and picnickers to its boat ramp and lawn year-round.
