The Vibe

What Richmond Feels Like

Vibrant inner Southeast between Hawthorne and Division

Richmond is energetic and walkable, bracketed by two of Portland's best-known commercial streets. Hawthorne Boulevard offers vintage shops, bookstores, the historic Bagdad Theater, and a steady stream of pedestrians, while Division Street has become a destination for some of the city's most celebrated restaurants.

Between the corridors lie quiet residential blocks of bungalows and four-squares, giving residents the best of both worlds: a calm, leafy home base steps from a vibrant, food-focused commercial scene.

History

How Richmond Came To Be

Richmond is a Southeast Portland neighborhood that developed in the streetcar era as residential blocks filled in along the major east-west corridors, most notably Hawthorne Boulevard and Division Street. The area grew steadily through the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s as Portland expanded eastward, drawing working- and middle-class families to its modest bungalows.

Hawthorne Boulevard, running through the heart of Richmond, became one of the city's signature commercial streets. Its concentration of independent shops, theaters, and restaurants gave the neighborhood a distinct cultural identity, and the corridor weathered the twentieth century to emerge as a hub of Portland's counterculture and small-business scene.

In the twenty-first century, Division Street along Richmond's southern edge experienced a dramatic transformation, with a wave of acclaimed restaurants and mixed-use development that made it one of the most talked-about dining corridors in the city. Together, Hawthorne and Division have made Richmond one of inner Southeast's liveliest and most desirable neighborhoods.
