— Northwest Heights, Portland
About
Northwest Heights sits in Portland's West Hills, occupying the elevated terrain between Forest Park to the west, Hillside and Goose Hollow to the south, the Pearl District area to the east, and Linnton to the north. It is one of the smallest and most secluded neighborhoods in the city, with a 2020 Census population of 5,927 — a 4% increase from 2010. Despite being just 8 miles (17 minutes) from downtown Portland, Northwest Heights feels genuinely removed from urban density.
The neighborhood is primarily single-family residential with a strong emphasis on privacy, nature views, and proximity to Forest Park's trail network. Homes are set on larger lots amid Douglas fir trees, with many offering expansive views of downtown Portland, the Willamette Valley, and on clear days, Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. There is no commercial district within Northwest Heights proper — residents use the Northwest District (NW 23rd Ave) and Hillsdale for shopping and dining.
Schools serving the neighborhood include Forest Park Elementary (K-5), West Sylvan Middle School (grades 5-8), and Lincoln High School (grades 9-12). The neighborhood's primary appeal is its combination of urban proximity and a secluded, forested residential character — a rare quality in a city as dense as Portland.
Boundaries: Bordered by Forest Park to the west, Hillside neighborhood to the south and southeast, NW Cornell Rd / NW Lovejoy St area to the east (transitioning to Northwest District), and Linnton to the north along the ridgeline. NW Skyline Blvd marks the western ridgeline.
The Vibe
Northwest Heights is green, residential, and tucked into the hills. Winding streets, mature trees, and view lots give it a serene, away-from-it-all atmosphere, with Forest Park's trails close at hand.
It appeals to families and nature lovers who want quiet, space, and access to the outdoors while remaining connected to the rest of Portland. The pace is unhurried and the setting decidedly woodland.
History
Northwest Heights occupies the upper reaches of the West Hills in the city's far northwest, a largely residential area that developed substantially in the later twentieth century as Portland's suburban growth pushed up into the wooded ridgelines above the older neighborhoods.
Its position high on the Tualatin Mountains, bordering Forest Park, gave the area a leafy, low-density character defined by view homes, curving streets, and abundant tree cover. Development was shaped by the steep terrain and the proximity to the protected forest.
Today Northwest Heights is a quiet residential neighborhood prized for its outlooks, its access to nature, and its sense of seclusion within easy reach of the wider city.
