What Montavilla Feels Like

Walkable, eclectic small-town main street

Montavilla has the feel of a small town tucked inside the city, with a compact, walkable business district along Southeast Stark Street lined with independent restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and a beloved weekend farmers market. History

How Montavilla Came To Be

Montavilla takes its name from a contraction of "Mount Tabor Villa," reflecting its origins as a small streetcar suburb on the eastern slope below Mount Tabor. The community grew up around the Base Line Road, today's East Burnside and Stark corridor, and developed as an independent town before being annexed into Portland in the early twentieth century.

For decades Montavilla functioned as a working-class commercial and residential district, anchored by the bustling Stark Street business strip. The opening of the Montavilla Theater and a dense cluster of shops gave the neighborhood a self-contained, small-town feel that persisted even as Portland grew around it.

After a long stretch of decline in the late twentieth century, Montavilla experienced a notable revival in the 2000s and 2010s, as new restaurants, bars, and shops filled in the historic storefronts along Southeast Stark. The neighborhood's affordability relative to inner Southeast drew younger residents and small business owners, sparking the lively, eclectic main street it is known for today.
