About
Homestead is one of Portland's most institutionally dense neighborhoods — and one of its most forested. The two qualities coexist on Marquam Hill (colloquially known as "Pill Hill"), where Oregon Health & Science University's main campus (3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Rd), the Portland VA Medical Center, and Shriners Hospital for Children occupy the hilltop, while hundreds of acres of undeveloped forest and parks cascade down the slopes toward downtown and Terwilliger Blvd.
OHSU, Oregon's only academic health center and research university, is both the neighborhood's largest employer and its most visible landmark. The aerial tram connecting OHSU to the South Waterfront district below is a city landmark in its own right. Marquam Nature Park, a 187-acre natural area, wraps around the south and west sides of the medical campus with 5 miles of hiking trails connecting Homestead to the broader West Hills trail network. The Terwilliger Parkway — a historic scenic boulevard with a dedicated walking and cycling path — forms the neighborhood's eastern edge.
Homestead's residential areas, scattered between and around the medical institutions, skew toward apartments and condominiums rather than single-family homes. Terwilliger Plaza (a continuing care retirement community) is a notable residential anchor. The Homestead Neighborhood Association coordinates through homesteadna.org and works closely with OHSU on issues of transportation, parking, and community interface on Marquam Hill.
Boundaries: Bordered by West Burnside Rd / SW Canyon Rd to the north, SW Terwilliger Blvd to the east, Southwest Hills and Healy Heights to the south, and the West Hills ridgeline to the west. Adjacent to Arlington Heights, Goose Hollow, and Southwest Hills.
The Vibe
Homestead is wooded, steep, and institutional all at once, a place where forested ravines and quiet residential lanes sit alongside one of Oregon's largest employers. The presence of OHSU gives it a busy, purposeful daytime rhythm, while the hillside streets stay leafy and calm.
It appeals to those who want green surroundings and proximity to both downtown and the medical campus.
History
Homestead occupies the slopes of Marquam Hill in inner southwest Portland, immediately south of the city center. Its defining feature is Oregon Health & Science University, the sprawling academic medical campus that grew on the hill through the twentieth century and reshaped the surrounding area.
What began as a hillside residential district gradually became dominated by the institutions atop Marquam Hill, with hospitals, research buildings, and the university expanding across the upper slopes while houses filled the lower streets. The Portland Aerial Tram, opened to connect the hill campus with the South Waterfront below, gave the neighborhood one of the city's most recognizable transit links.
Today Homestead is defined by the OHSU campus, the green expanse of Marquam Nature Park, and pockets of residential streets that climb the hillside.
