About

Hayhurst

Hayhurst occupies a quiet pocket of Southwest Portland between Gabriel Park and the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway corridor, annexed to the City of Portland in the 1950s. Much of the neighborhood still carries a semi-rural feel — winding streets without curbs or sidewalks, large lots studded with mature Douglas firs, and the kind of dead-end lanes that dead-end into nature trails. The SW Trails urban network's longest path, Trail #7, runs north-south through the neighborhood, linking residents on foot to Gabriel Park and Multnomah Village.

Alpenrose Dairy, founded in 1916 by the Cadonau family, defined the western edge of Hayhurst for over a century. The 50-acre property hosted "Dairyville" — a living-history Old West town, a velodrome, a quarter-midget track, a Little League ballfield, and an opera house — all open to the community free of charge for generations. The dairy ceased milk operations in 2020, and the property entered a community planning process; as of 2026, the Friends of Alpenrose advocacy group continues to push for trail access and park space in any redevelopment.

Day-to-day commercial needs are handled at the intersection of SW 45th Ave and SW Vermont St, where a Fred Meyer and a New Seasons Market sit blocks apart — an unusual density of grocery anchors that serves both Hayhurst and neighboring Maplewood. The Hayhurst Neighborhood Association is an active Southwest Neighborhoods Inc. (SWNI) affiliate, hosting an annual National Night Out, trail workdays, and meetings that routinely draw significant turnout for a neighborhood of its size.

Boundaries: Bordered by SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy to the north, SW Capitol Hwy to the east, SW Vermont St to the south, and the Alpenrose Dairy / SW Shattuck Rd area to the west. Adjacent to Raleigh Hills (unincorporated), Maplewood, and Bridlemile.

The Vibe

What Hayhurst Feels Like

Leafy family-oriented southwest neighborhood

Hayhurst is leafy and relaxed, a southwest neighborhood where curving residential streets, mature trees, and tidy yards set the tone. It feels suburban while sitting close to the city.

It suits families and those who want quiet, greenery, and an easy reach toward both downtown Portland and Beaverton.

History

How Hayhurst Came To Be

Hayhurst sits in Portland's southwest hills, a residential neighborhood named for the elementary school that has long served the area. It lies in the rolling country drained by Fanno Creek, between the busier corridors of Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and the wooded slopes that climb toward Bridlemile.

The neighborhood developed steadily through the middle and later decades of the twentieth century, with homes set along curving streets that follow the contours of the hills. Its proximity to both downtown and the west-side suburbs made it an attractive place for families seeking a green, settled neighborhood.

Today Hayhurst remains a quiet, family-oriented part of southwest Portland, valued for its trees, its convenient location, and its access to nearby natural areas along Fanno Creek.
