History

How Sullivan's Gulch Came To Be

Sullivan's Gulch takes its name from the natural ravine that cuts across Northeast Portland, named for Timothy Sullivan, an early settler who claimed land in the area in the 1850s. The gulch itself became a critical transportation corridor: the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company laid tracks through it in the nineteenth century, and the route later carried both rail lines and, eventually, the Banfield Freeway (Interstate 84) and the MAX light rail down its center.

During the Great Depression, Sullivan's Gulch became infamous as the site of one of Portland's largest 'Hoovervilles,' a shantytown of unemployed and displaced residents who built makeshift shelters along the rail corridor. The surrounding neighborhood, set on the higher ground above the gulch, developed as a streetcar-era residential district with bungalows and apartment buildings serving workers and families.

Today Sullivan's Gulch is a quiet residential neighborhood named for the ravine at its southern edge, bordered by the Lloyd District and well served by the transit corridors that still run through the historic gulch. Its older homes and tree-lined streets sit just minutes from inner Northeast's commercial centers.
