About
Roseway grew up alongside Sandy Boulevard, which was paved in 1912–1913 and became one of Portland's most lively commercial arteries. Named after its sandy path along what was originally a Native American trail and Oregon Trail spur, the boulevard attracted small businesses, diners, and theaters that gave Roseway its enduring old-fashioned charm. Fairley's Pharmacy, established in 1913 at 7206 NE Sandy Blvd, remains at the same location more than a century later — its original soda fountain counter now operates as Rosebridge Coffee, offering a living slice of Roseway's layered history.
The neighborhood's most storied landmark, the Roseway Theater (7229 NE Sandy Blvd), opened in late 1924 as a silent film house with a pipe organ and an ornate stained-glass facade. It screened movies continuously for nearly a century until an electrical fire destroyed it in August 2022. Today Roseway is a comfortable mix of quiet residential streets and buzzing Sandy Boulevard commercial activity, with Vietnamese standout Mekha Restaurant, the Mom and Pop Wine Shop, and vintage shop ReRun 2 among the local favorites. The Roseway Neighborhood Association is active in shaping the corridor's future, working at the intersection of preservation and livability.

The Vibe
Roseway is low-key and practical — a small residential neighborhood wrapped around a stretch of Sandy Boulevard's mid-century commercial fabric. The side streets are quiet and modest, while Sandy carries a steady hum of traffic and small businesses.
It has an unfussy, lived-in feel, the kind of neighborhood where longtime residents mix with newcomers drawn by relative affordability and easy access to the rest of Northeast Portland.
History
Roseway is a compact Northeast Portland neighborhood that grew up alongside Sandy Boulevard, the old diagonal route to the Columbia River and the airport. The neighborhood developed as a streetcar and automobile suburb in the early and mid twentieth century, with modest single-family homes filling the grid on either side of the Sandy corridor. Its name echoes the rose-themed identity shared with neighboring Rose City Park.
Sandy Boulevard became Roseway's defining feature — a busy commercial artery lined with mid-century storefronts, diners, motels, and small businesses that served both locals and travelers heading northeast out of the city. The Roseway Theater, a longtime single-screen movie house on Sandy, has been a neighborhood landmark and gathering point.
Today Roseway remains a quiet, affordable residential pocket anchored by its slice of Sandy Boulevard. It offers an unpretentious, everyday Portland character at the transition between the inner Northeast and the outer eastside neighborhoods.
