Parkrose Heights

Parkrose Heights is one of six neighborhoods that make up Portland's Parkrose community (along with Parkrose, Russell, Argay Terrace, Sumner, and Maywood Park). For much of its history the area was unincorporated Multnomah County; it was annexed into Portland in the 1980s, which brought increased infrastructure investment but also accelerating change. Most of the housing stock — ranch-style homes, bungalows, and Cape Cods built in the 1950s and 60s — retains its midcentury character, with carports, modern latticework, and stacked stone exteriors giving the streets a distinctive suburban-Portland look.

The neighborhood has a strong and proud working-class identity, with a notable Latino and Russian immigrant community that has shaped local businesses and worship communities along NE Halsey Street and NE Sandy Boulevard. The ethos, as local observers have noted, is "head down, work hard, and help your neighbor." Parkrose Hardware at 10625 NE Sandy Blvd has served the community's DIY needs for decades, and a stretch of Halsey holds diners, breakfast spots, and neighborhood bars. The Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors (parkroseheights.org) meets monthly and advocates for this understated but tightly bonded community.
