About

North Tabor

North Tabor sits on the northern face of Mount Tabor, Portland's volcanic butte, bounded by Interstate 84 (Banfield Expressway) to the north, SE 44th Avenue to the west, SE 68th Avenue to the east, and SE Burnside Street to the south. The neighborhood is a transitional zone between the denser close-in SE neighborhoods to the west and the more suburban Montavilla district to the east, with a residential character of older craftsman bungalows and mid-century homes along quiet, tree-lined streets that follow the contours of the butte's northern slope.

Providence Portland Medical Center dominates the neighborhood's northeastern quadrant, occupying a large campus off NE Glisan Street that has been a medical anchor for the surrounding community for decades. The hospital's presence has shaped North Tabor's commercial identity: a cluster of medical-adjacent services, pharmacies, and food options has grown up around the campus, giving the neighborhood a reliable economic base that insulates it from retail volatility. The 60th Avenue MAX station on the Blue/Red lines provides direct light rail access to downtown Portland and the airport, making North Tabor one of the most transit-convenient neighborhoods east of Laurelhurst.

North Tabor's commercial nodes are modest: SE Glisan Street and SE 60th Avenue carry the majority of retail activity, including a handful of standout independents. Wajan, one of Portland's only Indonesian restaurants, has earned city-wide recognition for its authentic Jakarta-inspired cooking. Leikam Brewing brings neighborhood-scale craft beer production to the area, and Tabor Tavern serves as the community pub. The North Tabor Neighborhood Association maintains an active presence, coordinating with the Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Association on park stewardship and advocating for pedestrian safety improvements along the Burnside corridor.

Boundaries: Bounded by I-84 (Banfield Expressway) to the north, SE Burnside St to the south, SE 44th Ave to the west, and SE 68th Ave to the east. Adjacent to Laurelhurst (west), Hollywood (north), Montavilla (east/northeast), and Mt. Tabor (south).

The Vibe

What North Tabor Feels Like

Leafy, quiet eastside slope

North Tabor feels like a calm, leafy in-between place — residential and unhurried, yet minutes from the restaurants and shops of nearby commercial strips. Tree-lined streets, older homes, and the looming green presence of Mount Tabor give the area a settled, neighborly atmosphere.

It's the kind of place where people walk to the park, bike to work, and know their corner store, with a quieter pace than the trendier inner-eastside districts just to the west.

History

How North Tabor Came To Be

North Tabor occupies the northern slope of Mount Tabor in Southeast and East Portland, taking its name and identity from the extinct volcanic cinder cone that anchors the area. Like much of the city's eastside, the neighborhood developed in the early twentieth century as Portland's streetcar lines pushed outward, encouraging residential platting on the gentle grades north of the mountain. Modest bungalows and four-square homes filled in the blocks as working families sought affordable lots within reach of downtown.

For decades the neighborhood was knit into the larger Mount Tabor district before being recognized as its own association. Burnside Street and Glisan Street became important commercial and transit corridors, and the presence of major medical and institutional uses along these arterials shaped the character of the area's northern edge. The neighborhood today blends quiet residential streets with busier mixed-use thoroughfares.

North Tabor remains a transitional zone between the dense inner Southeast neighborhoods and the green expanse of Mount Tabor Park, offering residents both urban convenience and ready access to one of Portland's most beloved natural retreats.
