The Vibe

What Mount Tabor Feels Like

Leafy hillside around a volcano park

Mount Tabor feels green, hilly, and a little secluded, with winding streets climbing the volcano's slopes beneath a heavy tree canopy. The park at its center draws walkers, runners, and cyclists year-round, and the summit's viewpoints are a favorite spot to watch the sun set over the city.

The surrounding residential blocks are quiet and leafy, with the feel of a hillside retreat that is nonetheless minutes from the restaurants of Hawthorne and Belmont below.

History

How Mount Tabor Came To Be

Mount Tabor is named for the extinct volcanic cinder cone at its heart, one of the rare volcanoes located within a U.S. city's limits. The hill was named in the nineteenth century after Mount Tabor in the Holy Land, and the surrounding slopes developed as a desirable residential district as Portland expanded eastward in the streetcar era.

In the early twentieth century the city acquired the volcanic summit and developed Mount Tabor Park, incorporating open reservoirs that were part of the Bull Run water supply system. The park's design took advantage of the dramatic terrain, with winding roads, terraced reservoirs, and viewpoints looking west toward downtown and the West Hills.

The residential neighborhood that grew on the volcano's flanks filled in steadily through the first half of the twentieth century with substantial homes set on hilly, tree-lined streets. The combination of mature architecture, sweeping views, and the adjacent park has made Mount Tabor one of Southeast Portland's most coveted addresses.
