The Vibe
Hazelwood is a large, busy, and diverse neighborhood that blends residential streets with major commercial corridors and the regional bustle of the Gateway district. It has a practical, urban-suburban feel, anchored by transit and shopping rather than a single quaint center.
Its size and diversity give it a varied character, from quieter residential pockets to the activity around Gateway and the arterials that crisscross the area.
History
Hazelwood is one of the largest and most populous neighborhoods in East Portland, sprawling across a wide area east of 82nd Avenue. Like much of the east side, it was part of unincorporated Multnomah County for most of its history before being annexed into Portland during the major annexations of the 1980s and 1990s.
The neighborhood grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, filling in with single-family homes, large apartment complexes, and commercial development along its many arterial roads. The Gateway district at Hazelwood's western edge became a regional transit and commercial hub, anchored by the convergence of MAX light rail lines and major highways, and has been the focus of city efforts to develop a denser, walkable urban center.
Today Hazelwood is among Portland's most diverse and heavily populated neighborhoods, home to a broad mix of immigrant, working-class, and middle-class families, with a population reflecting the cultural variety of the city's east side.
