About
East Columbia sits on the Columbia River floodplain in the northernmost corner of Portland, annexed by the city in the early 1970s. The neighborhood is uniquely defined by the convergence of wetlands, open drainage ways, residential pockets, and heavy industrial uses — making it unlike virtually any other Portland neighborhood. NE Columbia Boulevard is the main commercial artery, lined with trucking companies, freight yards, and distribution facilities. It is common to see tractor-trailers moving through residential streets as the industries and neighborhoods coexist in close quarters.
The East Columbia Neighborhood Association was formed in 1977. Residential sections of the neighborhood include Craftsman and ranch-style homes, many built in the early 2000s, with the majority owner-occupied. Three golf courses — Riverside Golf and Country Club, Heron Lakes Golf Course, and Columbia Edgewater Country Club — actually surround the neighborhood on multiple sides, creating an unusual semi-rural buffer between the residential blocks and the Columbia River waterfront.
The neighborhood borders Sunderland to the southwest, Piedmont and the Columbia Slough to the south, Bridgeton to the west, and the Columbia River to the north. NE Marine Drive connects East Columbia to the regional trail network and provides access to the Columbia River waterfront wetlands.
Boundaries: Bordered by the Columbia River to the north, NE 33rd Ave / Columbia Slough area to the south, NE 82nd Ave approach to the east, and Bridgeton to the west. Surrounded by three golf courses on multiple sides.
The Vibe
East Columbia has an unusually quiet, semi-rural feel for a Portland neighborhood, with open parcels, big skies, and the nearby sloughs and wetlands lending it a natural, watery character. It feels removed from the city's denser core.
Residents value the calm, the proximity to nature, and the easy access to the river trails and Columbia Slough that thread through North Portland's edge.
History
East Columbia is a small, low-lying neighborhood along the south side of the Columbia River in North Portland, bounded by sloughs, levees, and floodplain. Its development was long shaped by the constant presence of water and the need for flood protection.
The area sits within the historic Columbia floodplain, and like neighboring districts it was reshaped by the levee systems built to guard against the kind of disaster that destroyed nearby Vanport in 1948. Agriculture, nurseries, and large open parcels long characterized the land.
Today East Columbia remains one of Portland's more rural-feeling neighborhoods, with a mix of older homes, open spaces, and proximity to the slough and river wetlands that define the peninsula's northern edge.
