About

Brentwood-Darlington

Brentwood-Darlington occupies a broad swath of southeast Portland between SE Holgate Blvd to the north, SE Foster Rd to the south, SE 50th Ave to the west, and SE 92nd Ave to the east. The neighborhood is predominantly residential — modest single-family bungalows and craftsman homes on tree-lined streets — with commercial activity concentrated along its Foster Road and SE 82nd Ave borders rather than within the interior.

The neighborhood has one of Portland's higher concentrations of Latino and immigrant families, and the commercial corridors reflect that diversity. Birrieria Jalisco, a beloved food truck on Foster, serves Guadalajaran-style birria. Iolani's Plate Lunch delivers Hawaiian plate lunch plates. Mehri's Cafe and Bakery is a cozy neighborhood spot for Persian-inflected baked goods and meals. Bun Bo Hue Restaurant offers Vietnamese noodle soup.

Portland Fruit Company operates at Foster and 81st, offering seasonal produce at accessible prices. Starlight Knitting Society nearby serves the crafting community. The neighborhood is bisected by the SE 72nd Ave bus corridor and is within biking distance of Woodstock and Foster-Powell commercial strips. Brentwood-Darlington Neighborhood Association hosts regular community events at Brentwood Elementary.

The Vibe

What Brentwood-Darlington Feels Like

Affordable diverse outer-southeast residential

Brentwood-Darlington is unpretentious, diverse, and residential, with a slightly rural edge that sets it apart from inner Southeast. Streets are quiet and lots tend to be generous.

The neighborhood has a strong do-it-yourself, community-minded character, with gardens, modest homes, and an affordability that has drawn families and longtime residents alike.

History

How Brentwood-Darlington Came To Be

Brentwood-Darlington occupies a stretch of outer Southeast Portland between Foster Road and the city's southern edge near Johnson Creek. The area developed later and more loosely than the inner east side, with much of its growth coming in the mid-twentieth century. For decades portions of the neighborhood lay just outside Portland's boundaries and lacked full city services, contributing to a more rural, unfinished feel that lingered in unpaved streets and large lots.

The neighborhood was annexed and gradually knit into the city, but it retained an affordable, working-class character distinct from the pricier neighborhoods to the north and west. Its name combines two of the small subdivisions that make up the area.

Today Brentwood-Darlington is one of Southeast's more affordable and diverse neighborhoods, valued for its larger lots, community gardens, and proximity to the Springwater Corridor and Johnson Creek greenway.
