Arbor Lodge

Arbor Lodge was platted on April 15, 1889 by Duff E. Sherman, a cashier for Oregon National Bank of Portland. The neighborhood developed contemporaneously with Piedmont, Overlook, and Peninsular, with most housing constructed between 1910 and 1930. The most western portion, known as the Mock's Crest subdivision, was added after World War II, giving the neighborhood a two-era character — Arts and Crafts bungalows to the east and postwar ranch homes to the west.

In 1993, residents pursued historic design district status for the area because of its "fine ensemble of bungalow and post-WWII housing, deep front building setbacks, and unique street lighting." The opening of the Yellow MAX light rail line on N Interstate Ave in 2004 transformed the neighborhood's commercial character, catalyzing a wave of new development including the New Seasons Market at 6400 N Interstate Ave and significant mixed-use construction near the transit stations.

Today Arbor Lodge is one of North Portland's most livable neighborhoods, balancing easy transit access with quiet residential streets. Futura Coffee Roasters operates out of a historic building at 1507 N Rosa Parks Way (the former Arbor Lodge bar). Hail Snail, a queer- and family-owned vegan cinnamon roll shop, has become a neighborhood institution. The Mock Crest Tavern, Tuk Tuk Thai, and King Burrito round out the local dining scene along Interstate Ave and Rosa Parks Way.
