They have very reasonable pet policies and the pet room was clean & inexpensive. Glen at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. Because of him alone it’s worth staying there. I will definitely visit again.
I was desperate and made a reservation at like 9 pm but still apparently didn't have my money.. the front desk clerk John saved my room for me and I finally had my money by 2am and I actually got to sleep and charge my phone and sleep safe before 11am check out. I'm very thankful for John there and he was really nice
I decided to take a chance on this place because of the positive reviews. Big mistake. Whoever wrote the positive reviews on here must have VERY low standards. The motel should be condemned because the floors in the hallways are very spongy and creaky. I was afraid to step on the floor because I thought I might fall through. Everything about this place is run down and decrepit. It's in a really bad neighborhood with many homeless people milling about all day and night. The halls and rooms reek of cigarette and marijuana smoke. The rooms are cavernous, though. They were pretty clean and surprisingly quiet rooms. There is no elevator or ice machine here. It seems like every OYO property is in a similar state as this one. For a little more money, you can stay in a nicer motel in a better neighborhood than this one. On short, unlike its namesake, there's nothing fantastical about this run-down dumpy motel.
Staff: stellar. Rooms: 2/5. While clean, our non-smoking room smelled strongly of smoke on entering and after airing out some. The bathroom featured a linoleum stapled “tile” backing to the shower, with visible discoloration around the edges. While the furniture and linens were older, they seemed clean and tidy. Overall the room did not meet our expectations so we asked for a refund / cancellation. Despite the fact that we spent a couple hours of deliberation as we had never done this anywhere before, the manager issued us a full refund and was very kind, transparent, and helpful throughout the process. The other front desk staff was very friendly and helpful and had allowed us to stow our bags in the office, since an earlier check in wasn’t available. Even though we did not wind up staying here, the unicorn inn staff did a wonderful job taking care of us.
My 18 year old and our cat travelled from Massachusetts to Portland Oregon this summer and stayed at least 10 different motels. All of them were less than 100$ a night. All of them had problems. None of them were like home. It's the nature of motels in that price range. There are many things out of motel managers' control -- such as what people do in their rooms (fight, smoke, bring bugs in their luggage, etc). The important thing is how motel staff respond. The Unicorn Inn has cameras on every public inch of its property. They take safety seriously. The motel is in a section of Portland that is affected by homelessness, but it is also the epicenter of truly terrific and authentic Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese (try Kenny's Noodles) food. Not only were the staff responsive to what we needed (moving us to a more comfortable room when it turned out we had to stay longer because our friend got sick and we couldn't stay with her), but other people staying were kind. Highly recommend if you want to feel safe and welcomed.
